Rather than offering a stock line, new construction boat building at Reuben Smith’s Tumblehome Boatshop is focused on building fully custom boats of the highest quality to suit your specific needs.
Custom Wooden Boatbuilding
At Tumblehome Boatshop, we work with you to understand how and where your new boat will be used, and then adapt construction and propulsion methods that suit those needs and your aesthetics.
- We have experience in the range of traditional boatbuilding methods, from the sawn-framed smooth-skin lapstrake method of the Adirondack guideboat, to the double-carvel, bent frame yacht construction.
- We work with a range of wood-epoxy techniques from cold-molding to glue-lap.
- We do traditional runabout bottoms and 5200 runabout bottoms.
We make decisions on construction based on our clients’ needs and wishes. We’re happy to work with our clients to come up with what’s right for you and the boat, rather than dictate the method.
Each method has its own requirements, and its own place—despite what many may say.
Propulsion options for your custom boat from Tumblehome:
- Quiet but powerful modern electric motors
- Modern and reliable gas or diesel engines
- Restored antique marine engines
- Oar/paddle/sail
The Tumblehome 24 | 24-Foot Custom Speedboat
We launched this fully custom 24-foot speedboat in the summer of 2015. Tumblehome Boatshop selected the talented designers at Stephens Waring Yacht Design to help actualize the client and builder’s vision for a boat with the signature long deck of a 1920s Gold Cup racer, but with modern features that make it just as enjoyable cruising with the family as racing about the lake.
Everything about her is custom, from the seat angle and depth, to the dinosaur bone shift lever, to the cupholders.
Clean lines and simple elegance, combined with highly innovative design & construction make this boat a standout.

True iSc™ | Replica of a Classic
The True iSc™ is a replica of the original 1926 Sound Inter Club (iSc) racing sloop, and is offered only by Tumblehome Boatshop. No true original builder plans exist for the historic Sound Inter Club class sailboat. But now the Sound Inter Club boat known to be the most original has been documented with laser technology, accurate to a tenth of a millimeter, to create the True Sound Inter Club.
